Toronto, Canada - 1998 Seminar Review by Ray Langley In a nutshell: "I have been rabidly craving to learn the Zi Wei Dou Shu and Four Pillars systems of Chinese Astrology for over two and one-half years. Master Joseph Yu was instrumental in making my dream come true!" The four days of the Zi Wei class included a heavy manual that is about three-quarters of an inch thick. Most of the first day was spent in learning how to construct the full chart, by hand, using calculations and tables. The manual also includes the Chinese Lunar Calendar, translated into English. We used Bill Clinton's chart as an example while learning to perform the calculations. Using the pencil (and eraser) methods, it took me almost an hour to construct my own chart later that evening, in my hotel room. Zi Wei is a complex system. The second day was largely devoted to the Decade (10-year) Cycles, the Annual, and the Monthly charts. In this section we also learned about the Four Transformations. Next on the agenda was Fortunate and Harmful Stars. Day three was about Stars in the different palaces and the relationships between many of the Major Stars, including many case studies. The last day we finished up with the rest of the Major Stars and more case studies. We didn't have enough time to cover all of the additional case studies in the manual, but this is o.k., as the case studies are set up to be used as "homework". For instance, a case study page will contain a complete chart of a person. At the bottom of the chart are questions that are asked by Master Yu….. "Focus on marriage and relationships. What happened when this person was between the ages of 15-24? What happened when this person was between the ages of 25-34? Will she get married later? When?" In my opinion, this class deserves a Five-Star Rating! All-in-all, I was delighted with the training I received in both courses. I highly recommend these classes to anyone who is interested in learning traditional Chinese astrology. Joseph Yu has a very mellow and subdued style of teaching. He is soft-spoken, and you have to concentrate to get the most out of the class. He has a special talent for explaining difficult concepts. He is willing to answer all questions, at any time. I am a teacher's nightmare. I sit in the front row and constantly ask questions and request further clarification. Not once did he say, "We will cover that a little later." :-) |
